Who are you?

I'm Dr. Judy, and I'm a consultant clinical psychologist. I enjoy singing choirs, playing tennis, and I'm a mum of four and grandmother of seven.

What is your background?

I have been working in the area of clinical psychology since 2001, 2002. I've focused on working in autism diagnostic services with a brief spell in inpatient services for about four years. About from 2011 to 2015. I've worked in prisons and in forensic services, and I feel blessed to have had a very varied and interesting career.

What are the first steps a parent should take if they suspect their child may need an assessment?

It depends on the age of the child. If it's a very small child, like three or 4-year-old, I would suggest talking to the health visitor or maybe a teacher at preschool or nursery for an older child. Obviously school can be a useful first point of contact to see whether the school have noticed anything. Ultimately, as well go to the GP and request a referral if that's something that is concerning you.

How can parents prepare for the diagnostic process to ensure they provide helpful information?
